Ruyi Hew
Ruyi (b. 1996. Malaysia) is a multi-disciplinary artist. Captivated by the bond between personal experience and her surroundings, she seeks to explore and reflect on the enthralling connection through her work by enquiring how geographical determinism exerts influence on her line of thought and behaviour.
Trained as a painter, her works transitioned from paintings to installations, after having been introduced to a project titled 'Materiality', which focuses on the probability of extending the outcome of a certain medium. Her installations are constructed in both two and three dimensions. She continues to make spontaneous and responsive installations, mostly from ephemeral objects, during her spare time.
Captivated by the bond between personal experience and my surroundings, she seeks to explore and reflect on this enthralling connection through her work by exploring how geographical determinism exerts influence on her line of thought and behaviour. Her current work scouts around the scope of toponymy, examining road names and its association with origins and meanings in cultural and historical context.
